The whale shark (the world's largest fish) visits the waters off Holbox every summer to feed on plankton. If your dream is to swim alongside one, timing is everything. Here's the complete 2026 season guide, month by month, with weather, odds and tips to pick the best date.
When is whale shark season in Holbox?
The official season runs from June to August, with July as the peak month. Sightings occasionally happen from mid-May through mid-September, but the central months are the most reliable.
Month-by-month calendar
- Late May: the first sightings begin. Fewer people, but lower and irregular odds.
- June: the season starts strong. Good odds and not yet the July saturation.
- July: the peak month. Maximum concentration of sharks and over 95% sighting probability. Also the busiest.
- August: excellent, similar to July, with many sharks present.
- Early September: season's close. Sightings still happen, with fewer people.
Chances of a sighting
During peak season (July–August), the probability exceeds 95%. They are wild animals, so nothing is 100% guaranteed, but Holbox offers some of the best conditions in the world. In the rare case of no sighting, we refund the bracelet cost.
Weather and sea during the season
- Temperature: summer heat (28–33 °C / 82–91 °F), warm waters and good visibility.
- Rain: possible brief afternoon showers; departures are early, when the sea is calmest.
- Sea: calmer in the morning; that's why we set sail around 7:00 am.
- Bring biodegradable sunscreen (mandatory).
High vs low season: price and crowds
The tour price stays stable ($2,800 MXN, all-inclusive), but the experience changes: July and August see more demand and more boats, so book early. If you prefer fewer people, aim for June or early September. Accommodation does get pricier in high season.
Book ahead
July and August fill up fast. We recommend reserving your spot at least 48 hours in advance (more in high season). The deposit is just $500 MXN.
