Bioluminescence is one of Holbox's most magical sights: at night the water glows with blue light with every movement. Here is what it is, where to see it and when.
What is bioluminescence?
It is the light emitted by marine microorganisms (bioluminescent plankton) when disturbed. As you swim, walk or paddle, blue flashes light up around you.
When to see it in Holbox?
It is available year-round, but best seen on moonless or new-moon nights, when the sky is dark. June to October tends to be the most intense.
Where to see it?
In specific lagoons and beaches away from town lights. For safety and to find the best spot, going with a local guide is ideal.
How to experience it
- Classic bioluminescence tour: walk, swim or simply observe.
- Bioluminescent kayak: paddle through the blue sparkles, perfect for couples.
Tips
- Avoid DEET repellent before entering the water (it harms the ecosystem).
- Photos are tricky: use night mode or long exposure.
- It works even when cloudy: the light comes from the water, not the sky.
