Getting to Isla Holbox is easier than it looks. The island sits at the north of Quintana Roo and is reached by ferry from the town of Chiquilá. Here is every option from Cancún, Playa del Carmen and the airport.
From Cancún to Holbox
It is about 2.5 hours by car from Cancún to Chiquilá. You can drive, take a direct ADO bus, or book a private transfer. Once in Chiquilá, leave your car in a guarded lot and hop on the ferry.
From Cancún Airport (CUN)
There are transfers and buses from the airport to Chiquilá. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours to the pier, plus a 30-minute ferry.
From Playa del Carmen and Tulum
From Playa del Carmen it is around 3 hours; from Tulum, about 3.5 hours. ADO buses and private transfers are available too.
The ferry to Holbox
- Duration: about 30 minutes.

Tips
- There are no cars in Holbox: get around by golf cart, bike or on foot.
- Bring cash; some shops do not take cards.
- If you are coming to swim with whale sharks from Cancún, we recommend arriving the night before due to the early departure.
