One of the things that makes Isla Holbox magical is that there are no cars. That means the logistics of getting there and getting around are different from any other destination. This guide covers it all: the ferry, parking in Chiquilá, golf carts and how to move around the island.

Step 1: Get to Chiquilá
Every trip to Holbox goes through the town of Chiquilá, where the ferry departs. From Cancún it's ~2.5 hours; from Playa del Carmen ~3 hours; from Tulum ~3.5 hours. You can arrive by own/rental car, ADO bus or private transfer. Full details in how to get to Holbox.
Step 2: Parking in Chiquilá
If you arrive by car, you leave it in a guarded parking lot in Chiquilá (charged per day). There are several near the pier. Bring cash and keep your ticket. You don't need to (and can't) take the car to the island.
Step 3: The ferry to Holbox
- Duration: ~30 minutes.
- Frequency: frequent departures during the day (about every 30 min at peak times).
- Approximate price: around $250–$300 MXN per person each way (it can vary; check at the ticket booth).
- Companies: two operators depart from Chiquilá; the ticket is per person.
- Last ferry: check the schedule of the last return crossing if you plan to leave at night.
Tip: in high season arrive early, because the ferries fill up.
Step 4: From the Holbox pier to your hotel
When you get off the ferry you'll find golf-cart taxis waiting. It's the normal way to reach your accommodation. Agree on the fare before getting in (usually a fixed rate by zone). If your hotel is near the center, you can also walk.
How to get around the island
- On foot: the town is small and walkable.
- Bicycle: many hotels lend or rent them; ideal for nearby beaches.
- Golf cart: you can rent one by the hour or day to explore at your own pace (bring your license).
- Cart-taxi: always available for specific trips.
Key logistics tips
- Cash: ferry, cart-taxis and parking are usually cash-only.
- Comfortable footwear: the streets are sand.
- Light luggage: it'll make the ferry and cart transfer easier.
- Start early if you do the whale shark tour: departure is early; that's why it's best to sleep on the island. See the Cancún to Holbox guide.
Common logistics questions
Can I go and come back the same day? It's possible but tight; better to stay at least one night. Do I need to book the ferry? You generally buy the ticket at the booth the same day. Is there signal/internet? Yes, though sometimes slow. For everything else about the destination, read the complete Holbox guide.
