Swimming with the whale shark is unforgettable, and you'll want photos worthy of the moment. But water, movement and the rules make photographing it a bit of an art. Here are the best tips and recommended gear to capture the world's largest fish without ruining the experience.
GoPro vs phone: which to use?
GoPro (or action camera): the best option. Waterproof, wide angle ideal for capturing the shark's size, and stabilization for movement. Use a wrist strap or float so you don't lose it.
Phone with a waterproof case: an affordable and valid alternative. Make sure the case is good quality and rated for depth. Quality can be excellent with good light.
Avoid DSLRs without an underwater housing: the risk isn't worth it.
Recommended settings
- Wide angle: get close to the subject instead of zooming; water reduces sharpness at distance.
- Burst mode or 4K video: shoot video and extract frames; easier than chasing the perfect photo.
- 60 fps: to capture the shark's fluid movement.
- Lock exposure if your gear allows, to avoid sudden light shifts.
Positioning tips (respecting the rules)
- Swim alongside the shark, never in front or above its head.
- Keep the minimum distance (~2 m from the body, ~3 m from the tail); use wide angle to "get closer" without invading.
- Use the morning sunlight at your back to light the animal.
- Shoot slightly upward to capture the silhouette against the light.
- Include a swimmer in the frame to give scale to the shark's size.
Remember the official rules: no flash, no touching, no blocking its path.
What NOT to do
- Don't use flash: it's forbidden and bothers the animal.
- Don't chase the shark just for the photo: respect its pace.
- Don't obsess over the camera: live the moment with your eyes too.
- Don't hold gear without a strap: the seabed is full of lost GoPros.
