The essentials (don't forget these)
- Biodegradable sunscreen: it is mandatory. Conventional sunscreens with oxybenzone harm the reef and the plankton whale sharks feed on. Without a biodegradable one you won't be allowed in the water. Apply it 30 minutes before.
- Swimsuit: wear it from the hotel to save time in the morning.
- Quick-dry towel: packs small and dries fast on the boat.
- Valid ID: required for registration and the official bracelet.
- Cash: for tips, the ferry and island purchases (many places don't take cards).
For your comfort on board
- Motion-sickness pills: the sea can get choppy. If you get seasick easily, take them 30–60 minutes before departure. This is our number-one tip.
- Cap or hat and sunglasses: the Caribbean sun is intense, even early.
- A change of dry clothes: for the ride back — you'll thank yourself.
- Rash guard or lycra shirt: protects from sun and chafing without extra sunscreen.
- Sandals or water shoes: comfortable for the pier and the boat.
Snorkel gear: should I bring my own?
The tour includes snorkel equipment (mask, snorkel and vest), so you don't need to buy anything. If you own a mask and feel more comfortable with it, bring it; a good seal greatly improves the experience. Fins aren't essential because you'll swim near the boat and wear a vest.
For your photos and videos
- GoPro or waterproof camera: the best way to capture the moment. Use a wrist strap or float so you don't lose it.
- Waterproof phone pouch: an affordable alternative if you don't have a GoPro.
- Charged battery and free storage: you won't want to run out of space in front of the world's largest fish.

What NOT to bring
- Conventional sunscreen (with oxybenzone/octinoxate): banned for harming the ecosystem.
- Jewelry or valuables: they can be lost in the water.
- Drones: not allowed in the sighting area.
- Alcohol: for safety, not before or during the swim.
- Single-use plastics: help us keep the sea clean.
Final recommendations
- Eat a light breakfast: with a moving sea, a not-too-full stomach is better.
- Hydrate well the night before.
- Arrive on time: departure is early to enjoy the calm sea.
- Always listen to your guide: the rules protect the animal and you.
