Staying in Cancún and dreaming of swimming next to the whale shark, the largest fish in the world? Good news: the best sighting area on the planet is just a few hours away, off Isla Holbox. This 2026 guide walks you through how to get there from Cancún, what the tour includes, the full itinerary, real prices and how to book with no middlemen.
Why swim with whale sharks from Holbox rather than Cancún?
Although many tours advertise "from Cancún", whale sharks actually gather at the north of the peninsula, in the waters off Holbox and Cabo Catoche. Departing from Holbox means a shorter boat ride, calmer water, smaller groups (max 10 people) and far fewer boats around the animals. The experience is more intimate, safer and more respectful of the wildlife.
How to get from Cancún to Holbox
Holbox has no airport and no direct car access: you reach it by ferry from the town of Chiquilá. You have three main options:
- Own or rental car: ~2.5 hours from Cancún to Chiquilá by highway. Leave your car in a guarded lot at the pier (daily fee) and cross by ferry.
- ADO bus: there are direct services from downtown Cancún and, in season, from the airport to Chiquilá. Affordable and comfortable.
- Private transfer: the most comfortable option; you are picked up at your Hotel Zone or downtown hotel and driven straight to the pier.
The ferry to Holbox takes about 30 minutes and departs frequently throughout the day. Check the last return ferry if you plan to come back the same day. For all the details, read our guide on how to get to Holbox.
Can you do it as a day trip from Cancún?
Technically yes, but we don't recommend it. The whale shark tour leaves very early (around 7:00 am) to make the most of the calm sea. Leaving Cancún before dawn, catching the ferry and arriving on time is stressful and risky: any delay leaves you behind. The best strategy is to arrive the night before, sleep in Holbox and enjoy the island at a relaxed pace. That way you can also experience the bioluminescence at night. Prefer not to leave Cancún? We also run a whale shark tour that departs directly from Cancún, with hotel transfer.
